Ron Williams had a lifelong passion for steam
engines and travelled the country to see them in
action at all the big shows. So when he died on
June 10 his wife Lyn decided to give Ron, aged
74 a fitting send-off.
She arranged for a steam traction engine and
trailer to take his coffin from Holmer Church on
June 29 to Hereford Crematorium. A large crowd
of mourners gathered outside the church to see the
unusual funeral procession set off.
Said Lyn: “Ron loved steam engines and would
have been delighted that one took him on his final
journey.”
Ron, who lived in Holmer was a former
president of Hereford Lions Club and was a
member of Ross-on-Wye Steam Traction Engine
Society. Born in Staunton-on-Wye, he started
work on a local farm, joined Williams Shopfitters,
moved to Wiggin’s, worked on construction at
RAF Credenhill, became a National Express
coach driver and finally set up his own property
maintenance business. He was a member of St
Martin’s bowls club.
