Hereford’s amazing theatre and arts centre has
just celebrated its 20th anniversary – and it was
done in great style as you would expect of a
venue of such high calibre as The Courtyard.
One of the highlights was a grand dinner and
show on the floor of the main auditorium
together with an auction which raised £10,700.
The Arts Council recognising The Courtyard’s
cultural importance in the region, came up with
a magnificent birthday present of £500,000 for
front of house improvements.
The Courtyard really has become the
epicentre of social and cultural activity,
catering for virtually every taste. The quality
of the touring stage companies has never been
higher. You can watch live opera or ballet
shows screened direct from London. If it is a
good laugh you want comedy at The
Courtyard will have you in stitches. And don’t
forget the annual Christmas panto. It attracts over 20,000 every year.
But it provides much more than entertainment. Over 400 belong to the
youth theatre group staging their own productions. There are special
dementia therapy classes, singing or dancing groups for the elderly and craft
groups. And to top it all the Courtyard café gets praise for its cuisine.
But, as we all share in the success of the Edgar Street venue we should
not forget the vision and hard work of the small group of amateur theatre

swimming baths and converted it into the Nell Gwynne theatre. A quarter thousands of city kids had once learnt to swim.

The reply to the grant request was NO, but the
lottery folk, too, had a vision and offered £4.5m
to demolish the old baths building and build a new
theatre and arts centre on the site. Now, 20 years
later The Courtyard is recognised by the Arts
Council as one of the nation’s Top Ten regional
venues. It is worth remembering that but for the
actions of those few theatre buffs so long ago the
council would have demolished the baths and
built houses on the site. And Herefordshire would
have remained a cultural desert!
