As the nation marked the centenary of the end of the
First World War on November 11 families would
either be thinking of those family members who never
came home from the battlefields or of those who
survived and lived to create their own family.
Christine Jennings, 80 who lives with husband Colin
in Highmore Street, Hereford is certainly grateful that
Manchester born Thomas Moss got home safe, met his
future wife Dora in Sussex; came to Hereford as an
Inspector with the department of Agriculture, Fisheries
and Food. He was Christine’s father.
One treasured family heirloom is the Military Cross
Thomas was awarded for bravery. He had graduated
from Manchester University and joined the Royal
Engineers Regiment at 20. He would later be promoted
to Lieutenant seeing action in some of the worst
battles, including the Somme. But it was his own army
that nearly killed him in the Battle of Loos. They
attacked the Germans with deadly Gas only for the
wind to blow it back into the British trenches. Thomas
was evacuated to England to recover before returning
to France and his regiment..
Like families across the country the Jennings, their
two daughters and grandchildren thanked God on
Remembrance Sunday that he brought Thomas home
alive so they, too, could create a family of their own.

for the elderly It can be a
lonely time of the year for
so many who are living on
their own. So I ask if
you have time to spare
at this busy time of
year or a spare place
round your table,
remember others and
just knock the door
and say hello and
maybe invite them to
join you.
I would like to say a
special thank you to
all the volunteer
groups that go out of
their way throughout
the year to help in
their communities by
enriching the life of
others . Also a big
thank to all the people
that work so tirelessly
over the festive
season like the Police,
Fire Service, Doctors
and Nurses.
So everyone please
stay safe and have a
very Merry Christmas
and a Happy New
Year.
