everyone craves an invite: A summer garden party at
Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen herself. Ian
Foster and his wife Pauline who live in Sutton St
Nicholas were on the guest list for one of the parties
in the summer.
Ian, who was President of Hereford Lions Club
gives Festive News readers an insight into what it is
like to wander around the palace gardens and eat one
of her Majesty’s famous cucumber sandwiches.
‘It was a very hot sunny day and after queuing for
half an hour we finally made that exciting walk
through the gates of the Palace, crossing the courtyard
and into the inner sanctum of the Palace – passing
through the Marble Room and into the garden.
‘First thing that hit me was how superb the lawns
were, like walking on an Axminster carpet. There are
no formal flower beds, mostly rhododendrons,. roses
and Irisis, but a rural idyll in the vastness of the capital
city. The traditional afternoon tea is served in a
marquee on the lawn. The cucumber sandwiches were
delicious.
Her Majesty, accompanied by her sons , Andrew,
Edward and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex toured
the garden, occasionally stopping to chat to guests.
You quickly realise you are attending a very special
event in a very special location.’
