PROJECTS
Hereford Lions Club has set up a special fund to help combat
the growing phenomena of loneliness in our communities.
Grants will be available to
organisations wanting to set up
clubs or activities to benefit people
suffering from the effects of
loneliness, a growing trend in a
modern society in which social
media dominates. The health and
welfare of those suffering from it
can be seriously impaired.
Government has recognised that
action is urgently needed in
communities to overcome some of
its worst effects.
All ages affected
It’s not only the elderly effected.
Recent research
shows young
people are also at risk.
Simon Swancott, leader of Lions
Community Support team, said:
“The club is already involved with
the elderly and the handicapped,
taking them on outings in our mini-
bus and hosting social events but
we believe much more can be done
by organisations across the city and
in the villages taking direct action to
help those trapped in an on-going
cycle of loneliness by personally
?
inviting them to social activities.”
He added: “Lions contribution to
this worthwhile project is the
provision of grants to help
individual volunteer groups wanting
to help relieve loneliness, get
started.”
For their 25th anniversary Lions
funded the setting up of Silver
Diners lunch clubs and now, to mark
their approaching 60 in 2020 they
want to encourage a new wave of
activities aimed at bringing ‘the
lonely’ into the community fold of
friendliness .
Ideas wanted

communities tackle the despair of
loneliness.”

Hereford Lions Club has donated £15,000 to
help fund two key projects at the County
Hospital.
The club responded
with a £5,000
contribution to the Born Sleeping appeal fund
to raise £75,000 for a specially adapted
delivery suite, family bedroom and a coun-
selling room in the maternity unit for parents
whose baby does not survive the birth. This is
a first for the hospital and aims to give
grieving families private space to cope with
their loss and be given professional support.
Work is about to start on the project which
will be part of the maternity unit. The appeal
fund has almost reached its target gaining
huge support from the public.
When an appeal fund was launched by the
Prostate cancer unit to purchase a much
needed replacement sample testing machine
Lions again decided it was a worthy cause
having lost several fellow members over the
years to the cancer. A £10,000 donation was
given, supported by club president Jim
Hamilton who chose it as his personal project
for the year.
Before Hereford hospital established its
own Prostate unit patients faced long
journeys to Cheltenham or Birmingham.
