There is also an education suite enabling St Michael ’ s to provide palliative care training for health care professionals , and the Herefordshire Hospice at Home Hub , which organises care for patients in their homes across the county .
Careful planning has ensured the new facility can provide all the support families need . There is space for friends and relatives to be together , including tranquil gardens , a spiritual space and a café open to all .
‘ The opening of the new Hospice Day Services building is exciting news and has only been possible thanks to the thousands of generous donations we have received from our community ,’ said Ruth Denison , the Hospice ’ s Director of Income and Marketing .
’ The quality of the Inpatient Unit means patients are now benefiting from the privacy and comfort that the building offers .
‘ And thanks to the technology used , running costs are being kept to a minimum , meaning more money can go to providing hands-on nursing care .’
Hospice CEO Mike Keel said , ‘ The old building was bulging at the seams and we needed to create a Hospice that could meet the needs of the community . I am thrilled that after years of planning , and three years of construction , Herefordshire now has the facility it deserves .
‘ I would like to thank everyone who has played their part in making it possible for Herefordshire to be home to a truly world-class Hospice .’

St Michael ’ s Hospice ’ s annual Light up a Life programme continues until December 19 .
The first of the 27 services and events took place at the end of October , giving people the chance to come together to remember the lives of those close to them who have died .
This year , for the first time , there will be an interfaith service reflecting the different faiths in Herefordshire .
It takes place on 7th December at the Quaker Meeting House in King Street , Hereford from 3pm .
‘ I have been attending Light up a Life for the past ten years ,’ said the Hospice ’ s Head of Family Support , David Vonberg .
‘ However , last year , when I lit a candle for my dad who had died a few months previously , I was far more moved than I thought I would be . It was as though I was cradling him and his memory in my hand . As I placed a lighted candle on a table , I felt that those memories were safe and the flame was a beacon of hope . I was enormously grateful to the Hospice for giving me that opportunity to find healing and support .’
Meanwhile , St Michael ’ s now has a newly refurbished building to join its new Inpatient Unit , which was unveiled last March .
Thanks to the charity ’ s countless supporters , the refurbishment of the Hospice ’ s former original building into the Hospice Day Services is now complete .
Together , the development is ensuring that the people of Herefordshire and the surrounding counties have access to the very best palliative care for generations to come .
The Hospice provides spacious en-suite private bedrooms , community spaces , consulting rooms , therapy and rehabilitation rooms .
