PAGE 4 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2016 LIONS CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF WORLDWIDE COMMUNITY SERVICE One man’s vision in 1917 of a better world led to a huge army of volunteers working in their communities in over 200 countries across the globe. WELL COTTAGE, BRAMPTON ROAD, MADLEY. HEREFORD HR2 9LX Telephone/Fax (01981) 250670 RAVENHILL The organisation Melvin Jones, a Chicago business leader set up in his home city would a century later have grown into the universally respected Lions Clubs International, with 46,000 clubs. Jones posed the question – what if people put their talents to work improving their own communities? Today there are 1.35 million of them doing just that. Lions has become the largest community service organisation in the world, with direct links to the United Nations who rely on the global reach and fund raising expertise of Lions to help when national disasters strike anywhere in the world. ! The challenge now is to ensure that future generations take up the baton and do their bit here in their own community and on the bigger world stage when aid is desperately needed. Those men and women led the way down the years and now today’s younger generation need to take up the humanitarian cause both in their own communities and overseas. HEREFORD LIONS CLUB AND YOUR COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! Hereford Lions Club is seeking new members to help the club fulfill its promise to serve the community. Being part of the worldwide Lions International organisation offers the opportunity to broaden your own horizons and experiences and to share these with like- minded people. The reward? The satisfaction of knowing you have made a big contribution improving your own community here in Hereford and those across the world in need of a helping hand. Joining a group of volunteers and working alongside them on community projects and fund-raising activities also offers new friendships and a lively social life. Reading the columns of Lions Festive News will give you an insight into ‘Life with the Lions.’ There is lots to do – and lots of fun doing it!
