FREEDOM OF DUTCH CITY FOR TONY COLE
Forty years ago retired accountant Tony Cole organised the first trip for Hereford
schoolboys to an international youth football tournament in the Dutch city of
Vianen – and never missed a tournament for the next 39 years. But he was
missing from the 40th anniversary games earlier this year when the Mayor of
Vianen, Wim Groeneweg announced Tony, still recovering from cancer
treatment, had been made a Freeman of the City in honour of his outstanding
contribution to international youth football. His Freeman medal, in a case made
of ebony, bronze, silver and gold was presented to him by the Mayor of Hereford,
Councillor Jim Kenyon on behalf of the Mayor of Vianen in a special ceremony
at the Town Hall attended by fellow members of Hereford Lions Club, sponsors
of the four teams picked for the annual trip and the volunteer team managers.
Over the four decades 2,400 local lads have had the experience of playing against
other European teams, and also hosting teams from the Vianen club in October
each year. The Hereford contingent , ranging from under 12’s to under 18’s,
celebrated Tony’s award by bringing home the tournament champion’s trophy, a
feat they have achieved on 18 previous occasions, including a run of 11
consecutive wins from 1979.
Said Tony, a former treasurer of the old Hereford United vice-president’s club
who played his own football with his home town club, Presteigne, gaining a
Welsh Youth Cup runners-up medal . “Organising the trips to Holland has been
a privilege and a pleasure, but like the football it has been a great team effort.”
Tony paid a special tribute to his fellow Lion Stuart Sheehan who has taken on
the role of organiser.
The four teams competing in this years tournament did Tony proud by returning
home with the overall tournament championship title. The under 12’s won their
section and their player of the tournament was Archie Muirhead. The only 14’s
reached their semi-final losing to host club Brederodes, their player of the
tournament was Grant Horton. The under 16’s also reached the semi-final but
lost 1-0. Their player of the tournament was Kyle New. The under 18’s won their
final 1-0 to ensure the championship award came back to Hereford for the
