VETERAN SCHOOL GOVERNOR RETIRES

The county ’ s longest serving school governor , Des Brooke is retiring after 26 years as a governor at Riverside School , Hunderton . He stood down as chairman two years ago after 15 years in the role , including the period when the old Hunderton Primary and Juniors schools were demolished , and the combined new school given a new name .
Des , 80 said the long years he had devoted to the school had been : ‘ a joy and a privilege ’ and he was proud of what the school had achieved in the 10 years since its transformation . Pupil numbers had risen from 350 to well over 500 .
Educated at Hereford Cathedral School , he went on to have a successful career as a quantity surveyor , becoming a partner in a city practice . Des is also a former president of Lions Club as were the late David Mathias , a former head teacher and the late John Weatherall who was vice-chairman of governors .
Also due to retire in August next year is Jim Preston , head teacher at Riverside School since 2007 . He was one of the last students to be trained at the old Hereford Teacher Training College , now the College for the Blind .
