A SPECIAL WINDOW FOR A SPECIAL REGIMENT
Hereford has been home to the Special Air Service regiment for the greater part of its 75 year existence and the news that the anniversary of its founding in 1941 to fight behind enemy lines in World War 2 is to be marked by a stunning new window in Hereford Cathedral has been greeted with enthusiasm .
The SAS men and their families have over the years become a big part of the life of the city , and many when they retire from the army happily settle here . Such is the importance of the “ Who Dares Wins ” regiment to the city that the new Enterprise Park at Rotherwas was designated as a centre for defence and security businesses .
The highly trained troops are today at the forefront of the fight against terrorism , preferring to carry out their missions without a media fanfare , but the new memorial window in the 1000 year cathedral due to completed in April next year will in the centuries ahead be a permanent national reminder of their bravery
Created by world renowned sculptor John Maine , the window is made of 4,000 pieces of stained glass in bold and vibrant blues and yellows rising from chaos to calm , a truly fitting tribute to a body of men dedicated to protecting the nation .
