LIONS SUPPORT
FOR CHILDREN
WITH MENTAL
HEALTH ISSUES
A shocking report that the number of children and young people in
Britain with mental health issues had dramatically increased in the last
few years has prompted calls for action to improve support services here
in Hereford and the rest of the county.
The Children’s Commissioner Review published earlier this year
revealed that 1 in 10 of those under the age of 18 will suffer from some
form of mental health problems, and many of them will get no
professional help. It is believed that up to 500 children and teenagers in
the county might need support to deal with issues which could seriously
impact their future lives.
MIND, the city based mental health
charity plans to introduce new
services run by trained staff to tackle
the growing problem and Hereford
Lions Club has given an initial grant
of £5,000 to get the much needed
scheme up and running . Said club
president, David Hartland, “We
found the figures in this report very
disturbing and as part of our ongoing youth development project
wanted to support this positive
initiative by MIND and their quick
response to a lack of funding by the
NHS and Herefordshire Council to
prevent a potential crisis affecting a
whole generation.”
Richard Kelly, Executive Director
of MIND, told Festive News: “This
generous grant from Lions Club
could not have come at a better time.
There is no public sector funding for
early intervention in the field of
mental health. We had already
recognised just how vital a tailormade support service was for
children and young people showing
signs of early mental health
problems but lacked the financial
resources to set it up.
“It is important that symptom s are
identified at an early stage and
support provided
to prevent
personal – and costly –
consequences in later life. Above
all, we want mental health to be
treated fairly and equally with
physical health.”
MIND plan to establish links
with schools and youth clubs across
the city and county through which
youngsters can talk informally about
their concerns with a therapist as the
first step in the recovery process.
JUST WHAT I WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS, SAYS MARLEY
Hereford Lions Club has made sure that 18 year old Marley
George has got exactly the Christmas present he wanted - a
specially built three wheel bike which will allow him to get
out of his wheelchair and pedal away. Marley, who lives with
his mum Vanessa Gross on Grandstand Road, Hereford has
cerebral palsy and can’t walk, but in his new low slung
specially designed machine he becomes a free and
independent spirit able to take off on a bike ride like other
teenagers. The £3,000 life enhancing trike arrived in time for
Christmas, bringing a big smile to Marley’s face when he
took it for a trial run. “It is just what I wanted. I could not
have wished for a better present,” said the former Whitecross
Academy pupil now a student at a sports college in Coventry
