HEREFORD HR2 9LX Telephone/Fax (01981) 250670 CITY CLUB CELEBRATES CENTENARY OF LIONS INTERNATIONAL A century ago Melvin Jones, a Chicago insurance salesman had a Vision: What if people put their individual talents to work improving life in their own communities. Many fellow citizens responded to his appeal for volunteers and he called them Lions because ,in his mind, the mighty lion epitomised the strength, courage and fidelity they would need to create the community action groups he envisaged. Today Lions Clubs International is universally respected as the largest community service organisation in the World, with 1.4m million men and women volunteers in 46,000 clubs in 200 countries. Hereford Lions Club was founded in 1960 - better late than never – but in its 57 years the club and its members have certainly made a big difference to the lives of those in our community needing a helping hand . To mark the landmark, Hereford Lions Club donated £1,000 each to ten local charities, everyone one of them and their volunteer workers doing exactly what Melvin Jones asked of his own community way back in 1917. The cheques were presented by Lady Darnley, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire at a Civic Reception in the Town Hall hosted by the Mayor, Cllr Sharon Michael. Said club president Ian Foster, “It was a wonderful evening paying tribute not just to those in Hereford, but to volunteers across the world who help make their own communities better and safer places to live and bring up families.” The ten charities and a brief description of their contribution to the community: ASPIRE Aspire was formed 30 years ago to support adults with learning difficulties and now run the Canal Road day centre for those with extra care needs. Cheque received by Karen Hall. BARRS COURT SCHOOL This is a school for children with special educational needs and disabilities. Lions Club has close links with the school and can vouch for the marvellous work they do. Cheque received by Lisa Appleton.
