CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR The Mayor of Hereford, Cllr Sharon Michael sends to everyone in the city her best wishes for a happy and joyful Christmas. As a supporter of the campaign to encourage more people to become volunteers in the community to help overcome the loss of so many public services, the Mayor adds to her festive greeting a tribute to all those already working with voluntary charity organisations doing a marvellous job. Keep up the fantastic work. FAILURE WILL BRING SUCCESS FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2017 • PAGE 31 Hereford’s bid to become the nation’s next City of Culture in 2021 fell at the first hurdle, but its legacy will have a profound and long term effect on the cultural life of Herefordshire. The Herefordshire Cultural Partnership was set up to prepare the bid on behalf of both the city and the county, representing fragmented groups with a culture connection and is now a permanent body championing the arts. It has already scored a major success, winning a Great Place award worth £700,000 from the Heritage Lottery fund working with the Arts Council and Historic England Abigail Appleton, Principal of the Art College and a member of the Partnership’s communication team told Festive News:”The project will be delivered by the Rural Media company on our behalf and a team has been set up to explore new ways of engaging with and sustaining our local heritage. Consultations are also underway to develop a long term cultural strategy for the county.” One of the first new events staged by the Art College, BID and other partners in the city centre in October was Ferrous2017, an artist blacksmithing festival highlighting Hereford’s unique position as the only UK city offering a BA degree course in the subject. The Cultural Partnership is establishing a new governance structure to ensure it is open and representative of the county. Said Abigail: “We are a young organisation but I am optimistic we will look back on the City of Culture bid as a launch-pad for future achievements, not a failure.” N e w , s e c o n d h a n d a n d g r a d e d c o o k e r s M a i n s g a s & L P G a l s o w a s h i n g m a c h i n e s , f r i d g e s a n d f r e e z e r s M o b i l e h e a t e r s e rv v i c i n g B o t t l e d g a s s u p p l i e d a n d d e l i v e r e d F O C w i t h i n c i t y E X P R E S S G A S G A S S A F E T Y E N G I N E E R S A V A I L A B L E 8 7 W h i t e c r o s s R o a d , H e r e f o r d T e l : ( 0 1 4 3 2 ) 3 5 6 0 7 8 Hereford’s Original Jean Store Est. 1949 Celebrating 67 years, here to stay and looking forward to serving our customers in the future.
