BRAVE FINDLEY LEARNS TO COPE
WITHOUT HANDS AND FEET
After going through the trauma of seeing their two year old son Finley lose his hands and his feet the Amos
family were badly in need of a holiday to help recover from the stress of the life changing operation. When
Hereford Lions Club heard of their plight they quickly arranged a seaside holiday in an hotel in New Quay
which has one of the best beaches in Cornwall.
Despite his handicap Findley, who will be three in February enjoyed
playing on the beach with his brother Brandon, 10, dad Matt and mum Sarah.
He also has a 16 year old brother Jack. The family enjoyed visits to the
aquatic centre and the famous Eden Project.
A victim of septicaemia and meningitis, Findley’s life was at stake and
doctors in Birmingham had to amputate his fingers and thumbs and his feet
in June. Back home in Hereford after the week long holiday in September
Matt said “Being told by doctors that Findley’s life depended on the
amputations was a terrible blow, but he is a brave little boy and coping well.
The gift of a holiday from the Lions Club helped us overcome some of the
trauma we have gone through over the last few months.”
The latest bit of good news is that Findley has now had prosthetic feet
fitted to help him walk but will have to wait until he is older for replacement
hands. Matt has given up work to care for him.
Friends have started a fund raising campaign to help support Findley and
his family as he grows up. Lots of events have already been organised,
including a team carrying a ‘patient’ on a stretcher up Pen y Fan in the
Black Mountains and down again. If readers want to help go

DOUBLE GOLD WINNER WINS BURSARY
Keira Jackson was just seven when a failed liver threatened
her life and she was put on the urgent transplant list.
Thankfully, a matching donor organ was found and she
underwent a successful eight hour operation in Birmingham.

Now, seven years later Keira is doing her bit to show that after a
transplant you can live a full and active life and at the same time she is an
ambassador for the transplant team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital
encouraging more people to join the life- saving transplant donors register.
The Leominster teenager returned from the World Transplant Games in
Spain earlier this year with two Gold medals, winning the badminton
singles and doubles just over a year after taking up the sport. At the UK
games this summer she won more golds and Keira hopes to repeat her
Gold success at the next World games in Newcastle 2019.
Hereford Lions Club award an annual £500 bursary to a young person
seeking to achieve a personal goal and after hearing how brave Keira not
only overcame her liver crisis, but is now using her sporting golden
champion status to ‘win’ extra transplant donors to save more lives, Lions
decided she was the perfect winner of the 2017 bursary.
She is a pupil at the Mortimer Academy and trains at Leominster
Badminton Club. Her proud dad, Mark said: “We couldn’t be more proud
of her.”
