Also in this issue PUBLICATIONS / GRANTS CORNER / OPPORTUNITIES / DEADLINES Affiliates Letter  The official newsletter for FEMS Affiliates Press for progress for International Women’s Day Celebrating women in STEM Women in STEM journal collection International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women all over the world. This year’s theme is #PressforProgress and encourages women to keep on pushing for gender equality. There are many groups and individuals championing women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM) and to address the gender imbalance in these fields. To celebrate, we are showcasing the amazing contribution women are making to microbiology research around the world in a special journal collection, as well as with a collaborative Twitter Moment of articles. Take a sneak peak of some of these amazing women as we celebrate their inspirational stories for International Women’s Day: Hilary Lappin-Scott OBE: FEMS Vice-President and FEMS Expert “I grew to understand the dearth of women in senior roles. I found that, increasingly people were asking me to raise awareness of this, to engage others and take actions. This has led to a ‘second career’ as an advocate for encouraging girls into sciences and attracting and retaining women in STEM careers.  I am now seeing more women developing their skills to take on senior roles and leadership positions and am working to generate and share best practices globally to keep pushing this key agenda.” Delftechpark 37A, 2628 XJ Delft, The Netherlands T: +31 15 302 0050 | E: fems@fems-microbiology.org We celebrate the great milestones and achievements from some of the women leading the field in the microbiology community.
