ATHLETIC / ATHLEISURE WEAR
1 . Behold , an Australian brand ! Exotica Athletica sell athletic and athleisure wear , aimed at reducing the emphasis on looking “ pretty ” whilst working out and instead focusing on strength and durability ( because let ’ s be real , we ’ ve all suffered from a pair of workout leggings that go transparent , leaving us feeling uneasy to move our glorious bodies ). Exotica Athletica celebrate women who lift and carry sizes AU4 through to AU26 … worlds apart from most athletic brands ! Impressively , their imagery features gorgeous models of all shapes and sizes , unretouched and not a hint of photoshopping “ flaws ” in sight . Woohoo !

2 . Fellow Aussie brand Female For Life runs from sizes AU8 to AU24 and praises the intersection functionality and fashion in athletic wear . They were founded to help women feel good whilst working out - because when you feel confident , you can focus on everything that your amazing body allows you to do ! Awesomely too , they work closely and donate proceeds to Endrometriosis Australia .

Remember , it ’ s up to all of us to be critical , analytical and smart consumers ! Not every body positive brand is going to get it 100 % right , 100 % of the time … but we can look for markers that they ’ re trying , improving and listening to their customers . When you buy clothing ( in person or online ), don ’ t just look for clothing that fits .
Look too , for brands that :
• Carry a diverse range of sizes . If they herald themselves as a plus size range , where do their sizes stop ? Do they cater for “ acceptable ” plus sizes only ?
• Show a range of body shapes , races , abilities and ages in their advertising / promotional collateral . Ask yourself , “ Based on the imagery in this brand ’ s advertising , what are they trying to sell me ?”
• Are transparent in their manufacturing processes . If they ’ re not open about their fabrics and where the garments are made , chances are they ’ re hiding poor manufacturing conditions . And whilst that may not directly impact us as consumers , it means that someone is making a tiny living wage and living in poverty to produce a garment for us . Body positivity means embracing inclusivity - and if the manufacturers aren ’ t included in that , it ’ s not truly body positive .
