Fashion Odds (Nov/Dec 13', Issue 2.) | Page 40

Fashion expert Jill Martin presents the Nautica collection and the number one displayed trend was plaids. This old school prep outake never sleeps and becomes retwisted for men and women. Plaids work wonder by playing layers of dashes and bolder. Or, stayed true to the traditional plaids of equally distributed lines and width. Either way adds deminsion to an outfit, and especially when layering.

This year introduced seven fresh designers and hence never before seen Hmong inspired fashion. We brought our attention to the top three designers, starting with Sanida Xiong. She incoporated the traditional Hmong flower textile as seen on the croppped top; but the top became well balanced with a glossy red and tangerine color blocking pleated skirt. Continuing the bold colors, Kahoua Xiong Pachay presented her strongest peice as a Zara-inspired skirt with soild neon pink and green to represent the Hmong culture. Nhia Xiong's minimal designs for plus size women however, won our attention. The well-fitted garments enhanced the model's curve, proving that all body shapes are beautiful. What more fresh ideas will be introduced next year?

Q: What advice would you give for someone who wants to work in your industry?

A: What really prepared me for what I'm doing now is that I interned at a lot shows. So working for free for a while is your best bet.

Q: What's the most challenging part about your work?

A: Definitely the hours. A lot of days I leave the house at 5 a.m. and don't get home until midnight.
