New York School for the Deaf announces New Educational Vision Plan
BRADLEY PORCHE ', ED . D . SUPERINTENDENT
WHITE PLAINS , New York – April 11 , 2018 - Dr . Bradley Porche ’, Superintendent at New York School for the Deaf , announced a new educational vision plan . Implementation of this plan will position the School for the future and reflects current trends in education . Students will now experience the full benefit of a S . T . E . A . M ( Science , Technology , Engineering , Arts , and Mathematics ) school , as do many of their peers at neighboring schools . The School is now updating their Mission and Vision statements to incorporate a STEAM focused K-12 Educational program in line with New York State standards .
In October , NYSD opened their new Center for Exploration and Creative Learning ( CECL ), which houses a brand new , state-of-the-art STEAM Lab , and implemented a STEAM pilot program . The students became fully engaged , and in five short months , developed a variety of new skill sets . They were excited about learning , and clamored for more . Dr . Porche ’ noted that it was clear that they excelled in this learning environment and that the time was right to move full “ STEAM ” ahead with additional emphasis on this program .
With the incorporation of a core STEAM focused K-12 educational program , NYSD will become a model school for the deaf . This “ specialty concentration of study ” in STEAM has not been readily available to our students in the past . Although their core subjects areas will maintain the same level of importance , the entire curriculum will be enriched by STEAM focused learning .
In a special presentation to staff members , Superintendent Dr . Bradley Porche ’ stated that “ All students should be taught to think deeply , and in unique ways , in order to have the opportunity to become innovators , educators , researchers , and leaders . A strong , STEAM based educational program will provide the tools necessary to address many of our current , and future , challenges . Currently , deaf students do not have nearly enough exposure and access to STEAM learning opportunities .”
This state-of-the-art STEAM program at New York School for the Deaf encourages students to use their imagination and creativity to apply STEAM principles to their learning . These skills , will prepare them
for either post-secondary education , or a 21st Century career path .
