for the first time at 20 and playing
in his band ‘The Kids’, was a route
of expression for the young Depp,
creativity never being far way from
his veins.
As is the case for many wannabe
pop stars, getting a breakthrough
proved elusive. Depp admitted:
“There were so many bands it was
impossible to make any money, so
we all got side jobs.”
The side job involved Depp selling
ads over the phone, telemarketing.
Selling and ripping people off by
selling grandfather clocks gave Depp
some money but ,importantly, it was
his first ‘acting’ role.
With the American dream fast
slipping away, the band disbanded
and divorce ensued. But there was
one glimmer of hope – his soon-tobe ex-wife had an old friend by the
name of Nicolas Cage.
An introduction duly arranged,
Cage suggested Depp try his hand
at acting and with the help of Cage’s
agent, Johnny received a call to an
audition for a role in a film titled
Nightmare on Elm Street. And the
rest, as they say, is history.
