FAITH THE MIRACLE OF THE Virgin Birth W “ hy didn’t Jesus come into the world in the regular fashion; a man and a woman copulating and 9 months later ‘voila’ a baby is born? Human biology teaches that the man plants the seed and a woman provides the egg and the nourishing environment in which new life is formed and eventually birthed from the womb. But Jesus didn’t come into the world via the traditional process. Yes he was formed in a woman’s womb but He wasn’t fertilized by a man’s sperm. Clearly God wanted to do something new; something spectacular! The bible tells us that: “Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:18-21) The birth of Jesus was an amazing miracle of God since a virgin conceived and gave birth. Part of the reason, Jesus was conceived in this manner is explained in Isaiah 7:14. “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” But the virgin birth was more than just a sign. Mary conceiving a child by the Holy Spirit goes against all the known laws of nature – but not the law of the Spirit. In this extraordinary unique miracle, God himself provided the seed for Jesus to enter the world. Jesus, the promised Messiah, then 22 familyandfaithmagazine.com ...Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) ” became the sinless sacrifice for all those who would believe in Him and gain the power to become ‘born of God’. Jesus was active in the Godhead during the creation of humanity and was also the key agent of the Godhead who would realize the plan to redeem the creation that He along with the Father and the Holy Spirit created. The book of John notes that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” To dwell among men on earth meant that He would have to become flesh or human but His DNA, His identity would not be determined by His creation. His identity was long established in the divine and so Mary had to conceive through the divine, through the Holy Spirit. And just as how His entry into the world was by the Spirit, our entry into His Kingdom is by the Spirit built on faith. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13. This Christmas season, let us reflect on the miracle of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and accept with open arms the power to become a child of God. Merry Christmas! SAH
