Community Input The success of any governmental agency can only be accomplished with ongoing conversations and input with the community it serves. The Park District of Highland Park utilizes a number or means to give you, our residents, a voice in your Park District, including: • Long-standing resident volunteer committees headed by Park Board members such as the Athletics and Golf Committees • Ad hoc resident volunteer advisory committees for large special projects such as the Rosewood Beach renovation and Community Park at the Recreation Center of Highland Park conversion • Adhoc special project open houses for neighborhoods and interested residents to share their thoughts and ideas on projects such as new park playgrounds and other improvements • Customer satisfaction surveys distributed to program and camp participant families on an on-going basis • Attitude and Interest surveys and focus groups conducted throughout the community for special projects The feedback we receive from you in these conversations along with personal conversations, phone calls, and emails we receive each day are invaluable to ensure the Park District of Highland Park continues to meet the needs of our community today and for future generations. Pesticide Application Notification The Park District of Highland Park uses the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system. By using IPM, we meet our objectives of maximizing cultural, biological and environmental controls while minimizing chemical use. Occasionally, chemical means are necessary. When these are used on Park District grounds, notification is made through posting of signs in the area, as well as contacting residents, by phone or email, listed on our “turf care notification registry.” If you would like to be added to the notification registry, please call the Director of Parks at 847.579.3130. Lightning Detection System In an effort to protect patrons from the threat of a lightning strike, the Park District of Highland Park has completed installation of ten Strike Guard lightning detection systems at key locations around the district. Strike Guard is a state-of-the-art solar-powered system with a unique and advanced detection technology that tracks actual lightning strikes and will sound when lightning is within a 10-mile radius. When lightning is detected, the system will sound a 15-second blast that can be heard from 2,400 feet away followed by a continuous strobe light. When this blast is heard or the strobe light is seen, park users and program participants should clear the area and seek immediate shelter. Once the system has detected that dangerous weather has cleared, 3 short blasts will sound signaling to patrons that it is safe to resume outdoor activities. Strike Guard sensors are installed at the following locations: Sunset Valley Golf Club (two sensors installed), Hidden Creek AquaPark, Deer Creek/Larry Fink Memorial Park (two sensors installed), West Ridge Park, Park Avenue Boating Facility, Centennial Ice Arena (two sensors installed), Sunset Woods Park, Recreation Center of Highland Park, Olson Park and Heller Nature Center. The system operates yearround between 7am and 10pm. GENERAL INFORMATION Fall 2020 • Park District of Highland Park 71
