YOUNG LAWYER SHOWCASE
The Young Lawyer Section (YLS) welcomed its new board in
May. Helene (Laney) Herauf has taken over the role of president
for the 2018-2019 year. Sarah Wall is the new president-elect
and Ashley Schell is the secretary/treasurer. Andrew Askew will
continue as the association Board of Governors representative.
Please be on the lookout for their YLS Showcases throughout
the year in The Gavel.
YLS will continue to host luncheons and happy hours across the
state for great social networking opportunities starting again
in the fall. If you are interested in hosting, please contact YLS
Secretary/Treasurer Ashley Schell at [email protected].
In addition, the YLS Education and Professionalism Committee
will continue to host webinars featuring various legal topics.
Young lawyers, as well as other licensed attorneys, are
encouraged to participate in these educational opportunities to
earn continuing legal education credits.
YLS is specifically looking for individuals interested in co-
chairing and participating in the YLS Community Service
Committee and the YLS Education and Professionalism
Committee. The YLS Community Service Committee is
responsible for organizing and implementing the annual
spring food drive. The YLS Education and Professionalism
Committee is responsible for planning and hosting the
webinars. If you are interested in participating in either

ALYSSA LOVAS JENNA McPHERSON
Alyssa Lovas is an associate
attorney with Zuger Kirmis &
Smith in Bismarck. She practices
primarily in the areas of civil
litigation, family, and criminal law.
She also has a juvenile contract
in the South Central Judicial
District. She is licensed in North
Dakota state court and the U.S.
District Court for the District of
North Dakota. Jenna McPherson is an
associate attorney at
Brudvik Law Office, P.C., in
Mayville. She focuses her
practice on probate, estate
planning, and collections.
During her time in law
school, McPherson served
an externship at the North
Dakota Supreme Court and
worked as a law clerk at
Brudvik Law Office. She joined Brudvik Law Office as an
attorney in May.
Lovas grew up in Chino Hills, Calif. In 2013, she graduated from
the University of Jamestown with a bachelor’s degree in history
and political science. She then attended the University of North
Dakota (UND) School of Law and graduated cum lade in 2017.
Alyssa was actively involved in UND’s Moot Court Association,
the North Dakota Law Review, and served as president of the
Criminal Law Association.
Lovas is a member of the Big Muddy Bar Association and serves
as secretary/treasurer for the Family Law Section of SBAND. In
her spare time, she enjoys golfing, spending time with friends
and family, traveling, and enjoying summer weekends on East
Spirit Lake in Minnesota.

THE GAVEL
McPherson grew up in Rogers, Minn., and moved to North
Dakota in 2010 to pursue a degree in criminal justice. In
2013, she graduated from North Dakota State University
with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a minor in
political science. McPherson continued her education at
the University of North Dakota School of Law, earning her
juris doctorate in 2017.
McPherson and her husband live on a farm in rural Cass
County. In her spare time, she enjoys being with family and
friends and spending time at the lake.
