Liberty Bell Award
The Liberty Bell Award recognizes individuals or
organizations who promote understanding of our
form of government, encourage greater respect
for law and the courts, and stimulate a deeper
sense of responsibility on the part of citizens
regarding their duties as well as their rights.
This year’s recipient was the Honorable David
Nelson, who has served as both a city judge and
district court judge for 32 years. During the oil
boom, Judge Nelson led the fight for additional
funding to expand access to justice in the
Northwest Judicial District. Under his leadership,
the Williams County Courthouse increased
its number of courtrooms from two to four
courtrooms, and the number of District Court
Judges increased from two to six judges. Judge
Nelson also participated in a number of boards
and committees, including serving 12 years on
the Joint Procedure Committee.
