GIRLS BASKETBALL

By: Bianca Ianneillo

Perhaps the only statement that has remained true this season is that Saddle Brook High School’s Girls’ Basketball team defies all the expectations one could have. Despite given the label as a “rebuilding team” after the graduation of three prominent seniors, the Lady Falcons have yet to fall under a .500 winning percentage. Under the leadership of two returning starters, Ashley Georgevich and Bianca Ianneillo, the team also revolves around freshmen who have great work ethics and understandings of the game. Going into the second half of the season, the team is 8-6 and remains eager to avenge all of their league losses.

Tournament play is something that will make or break the girls this season. In the first tournament the girls played in, the William Masopust Christmas Tournament at Lodi, they finished 2-1. They ended in third place after losing to Group 4 superpower Kearny, then blowing out the next two teams they played. Because of the compilation of wins the girls achieved early on, the team qualified for the revival of the Bergen County Invitational Tournament and was seeded as such. In the first round, they will see Group 1 competitor Emerson. Also, they will qualify for the NJSIAA tournament in the North 1, Group 1 section when the season comes to a close.
