GIRLS SOFTBALL

By: Gracie Leone, '21

The 2019 girl’s softball season was not as bad as we thought it was going to be since we were losing 4 amazing seniors from last year. There were many players who had to learn new positions this year. After losing our catcher, we had to move many people around the field. We also faced some difficult times after our head coach Mr. White was out for the season because of surgery.

Despite all of the changes, we played very well throughout the season. We showed up to play for all of the games, even the ones against some tough teams. One of our best games was toward the beginning of the season against Becton. We began the game with strong bats scoring a lot of runs in the first inning. The game was delayed because of thunder and lighting, but we eventually went back out on the field and won the game 9-3.

During the season, our starting second baseman Alexis Georgevich got a concussion during of our non league games. She was out for around 2 weeks and that caused us to once again move more players around to different positions they were unfamiliar with. Our first basemen Rian Meyers had to catch for us while our catcher Arian Aquino had to move to third base. Meanwhile, our third base player Gracie Leone was moved to second base. Fortunately, our team had two very strong pitchers: Dana Tommas and Gabby Santora. Both girls pitched amazing games all season. We also had some powerful hitters. During our regular season game against Wallington, Ariana Aquino hit a walk off home run to help us win 5-3. Our biggest hitter throughout the season was Rian Meyers who ended the season with a batting average of .449.

We finished our season placing 7th in the North 1 Group 1 State tournament. In our first State game, we defeated Woodridge High School 6-1 which advanced us to the second round of the tournament.
