expressed the challenge that this new mode of preaching poses—the need to be clear and concise in order to reach people who long for the true message that the Church and her ministers come to announce. While most in the media gave a political spin to the Holy Father’s words, our friars emphasized that his message is primarily spiritual: the Good News of Jesus Christ and the coming of His kingdom. Fr. Legge commented on another aspect of this experience, the ministry to the people working in the media. “We must remember,” he said, “that newspeople and on-air celebrities are men and women like all others, themselves in need of hearing the Gospel.” This engagement with the media is one of the ways that Dominican Friars have responded to the call for a New Evangelization. The transformation of our culture into a culture of life requires the confident and joyful announcement of the love and light of Jesus Christ. Pope St. John Paul II is a beautiful icon of this innovative preaching of the perennial Truth that has been entrusted to the Church. Pope Francis himself preached the Gospel boldly as he visited our nation and called on our pastors to do likewise. The Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph have heeded Peter’s summons and are responding with the same courage and fidelity that the “hounds of the Lord” have shown since St. Dominic founded the Order eight hundred years ago.
