PFIC FACULTY MEMBER RECEIVES PAPAL APPOINTMENT On September 23, 2014, Pope Francis appointed PFIC adjunct faculty member Fr. Thomas Weinandy, O.F.M. Cap., to the International Theological Commission. Originally formed in 1969, the commission analyzes important and difficult theological topics of pressing significance to the Church and serves as an important resource for doctrinal clarifications by the bishops. ALUMNI & F A C U LT Y On September 17, 2014, Fr. Luke Clark, O.P. (MDiv ’02), was installed as the new prior of the Dominican House of Studies. Fr. Clark was previously pastor and superior of the Dominican community at St. Thomas Aquinas in Charlottesville, Virginia. On June 9, Fr. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’86; STL ’88), was offered a new five-year term as President of Providence College. Among his accomplishments are the development of the College’s new core curriculum, the creation of the School of Business, and the establishment of a fund to help the matriculation of students most in need of financial aid. 2014 ST. THOMAS AQUINAS PRIZE WINNER Fr. Dominic Langevin, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’04; STB ’06), one of the newest instuctors at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception, was awarded the St. Thomas Aquinas Dissertation Prize from Ave Maria University in Florida. Faith & Reason - Fall 2014 Fr. Michele Benetti, F.S.C.B. (STB ’13), was ordained to the priesthood on June 21, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, Italy. Several articles by Fr. Basil Cole, O.P. (faculty), and the late Fr. Dominic Hoffman, O.P., were published this year by Our Sunday Visitor, including “The Incarnation: Purpose and Meaning of this Mystery,” and “Diabolical Presence.” In March, Fr. John Baptist Ku, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’98; STL ’00), gave a guest lecture at Christendom College’s Graduate School of Theology and Catechetics. The lecture, entitled “To Whom Do We Pray the Our Father?” is available for free on iTunes. President Barack Obama announced his intent to re-nominate Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’06; STL ’09), as a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), a nonprofit corporation established by the Federal Government in 1974 to help fund civil legal services for the poor. Master of Students Fr. Andrew Hofer, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’01; STL ’02), and Eastern Province Vocation Director Fr. Benedict Croell, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’98), appeared on EWTN’s Vocation Boom to discuss what is drawing so many young men to the Order. Amy Jill Strickland (MA ’97) recently became the Director of Faith Formation at St. Ann Parish in Arlington, Virginia and Defender of the Bond for the Diocese of Richmond. Fr. Stephen Ryan, O.P. (MDiv, STB ’92; STL ’94), Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture, has published “The Hidden Ministry of Prayer and the Reading of Scripture” in Christian Orient and a review of “Law, Prophets, and Wisdom: On the Provenance of Translators and Their Books in the Septuagint Version” in Catholic Bible Quarterly. 11
