Disney ’ s Queen of Katwe is a remarkable film based on the incredible true story of Phiona Mutesi and her journey of survival and ultimately learning to win in life . The film stars Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong ’ o , ( 12 Years a Slave , Star Wars : The Force Awakens ), as Phiona ’ s mother , David Oyelowo , ( Selma , Captive ), as Robert Katende , and newcomer Madina Nalwanga as Phiona .
The film is directed by award winning director / writer / producer Mira Nair . It tells the story of how Phiona Mutesi finds a safe haven for the children in Katwe where she discovers the game of Chess for the first time in her life . It is through the love and support of her mother , and the guidance and patience of her mentor and teacher Robert Katende , that Phiona discovers who she was really meant to be , a Queen .
Many people are uncomfortable being confronted with severe poverty and the conditions in which people live in other parts of the world . Why is it so important that they see this film ? It ’ s important because the film will show people a glimpse of
what it is like to step out for others and that even one or two lives impacted make a big difference .
What is Sports Outreach International and how did you become involved in its ministry ? Sports Outreach Institute is an inter-denominational non-government organization that uses sports to restore hope and transform lives . I was introduced to Sports Outreach by Coach Aloysius . I used to play soccer on his team and then I started volunteering to teach soccer and later recruited to play on their ministry soccer team .
Tell us about when and how you met Phiona Mutesi ? It was in 2005 that Phiona came to my chess program and I welcomed her just like I would to any other child . At first , I didn ’ t even know that she had a brother in the chess club !
The film focuses on Phiona . However , Phiona could not have learned without a patient and kind teacher to guide her . When did you know you were going to be a teacher and mentor ? How has being a teacher changed your life ? Being a teacher started way back in my school times . I could help teach my fellow students in math , soccer skills , and offer any other help as they needed it . Being a mentor , it comes through
