myths only to break their hearts later in their childhood , as well as possibly having them think Christ too was a myth since we have told them about Him yet we don ’ t see Him . 2 Peter 1:16 ( ESV ) says this about myths : “ For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ , but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty .” No one has ever seen the Easter Bunny . No one has laid eyes on Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy , but people were with Jesus in the flesh . They touched Him . They heard Him . Multitudes witnessed His miracles and His assent to Heaven . Let ’ s not confuse our children by teaching them to worship false idols .
When we think about the characters in fables , we can mistakenly , and do , urge our children to worship false idols . We don ’ t mean to . We don ’ t even think we are , but we do . These fables are false idols to our children . Our children seemingly worship Santa Claus because of what he stands for to them . We mask this by stating it is just for the spirit of the season , but come on , really ? Say what it is- worshiping a false idol . Santa might as well be considered a demigod because of his supernatural powers in the form of a man . Just because he is not born or part of the Greek and Romans gods , does not mean he isn ’ t treated as such .
Think about it . Does your child get more excited about Christ or Santa and the Easter Bunny ? Be honest . Do they write letters to God for what they want or Santa ? Do they wake up early on Sundays for church with the glee they do on Christmas and Easter mornings ? Don ’ t think so . What does this say about us as parents ? Are we guilty of promoting false idol worship to our children if we encourage them to believe in the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus ? Yes . Sorry to be blunt , but yes we do .
We are admonished to not have any other god but God only as stated in Exodus 20:3 . Like the golden calf fashioned in Exodus Chapter 32 , man has created a false god for children to worship . Some would say believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny is innocent and is not really important in the whole scheme of things regarding their relationship with Christ . It is though . Proverbs 22:6 directs us to train up our children in the way they should go . If we teach and allow them to believe in false idols , what are we training them for ? To be wholly dedicated to Christ and recognize His greatness ? Or to allow false idols to impregnate and corrupt their minds which could lead to questions of the validity of Christ and ultimately their faith ??
Instead , we need to flood their minds with Christ and His teachings . When we celebrate Christmas or Easter , we need to teach our children about why we celebrate those two days in concert with the Bible . We need to teach them to seek God , not worldly idols or possessions . 1 Chronicles 16:11 and Psalm 119:10 , for example , say to seek His presence . We shouldn ’ t set Him aside for some make-believe characters having nothing to do with our relationship or salvation in God . When we seek God with all our heart we will find Him ( Jer . 29:13 ) and He will draw near to us ( James 4:8 ). When Christmas nears and occurs , children should learn about the importance of the birth of Jesus , not toys or candy . When you teach them how history changed in relation to our relationship with God , they will know the importance of His birth to history and redemption . When we celebrate Easter , or resurrection day , we must explain to them the new covenant and what the death of Christ meant for all of mankind and how He died for our sins when His blood was spilled for us , as our living sacrifice once and all believers had a new relationship with God through Christ Jesus .
The world at large would have you think otherwise , as well as your children . The celebration of Christmas and Easter are tied up and promoted as a time for family , good times , celebration of life , etc . While this is all good it , these worldly twists of these holidays are a means to an end . What is it ? To drive a wedge between us and Christ . If society at large can turn the birth and resurrection of Christ into a holiday far removed from the excitement of having our savior born and ultimately being our sacrifice for our sins , what else can they do ? I mean , the two main events in Christian history have been manipulated by society ! If they can do this , what else can and have they done ? God is mostly removed from Christmas and Easter . We can ’ t even say merry Christmas to people for it may offend others or put a religious connotation about this holiday in view . Saying God bless on Eas-
