You are in love , and you want to get married . Of course , you want your family and friends to support you in your decision . You try to discuss it with your parents , but their reasoning just doesn ’ t make sense to you . They just don ’ t understand how much the two of you love each other . It is a very difficult and painful thing . What will you do ?
It is important to look at the reasons that they give you for their hesitation to accept this new chapter in your life . Do they disapprove of the idea of you getting married ? Or do they disapprove of the person you are marrying ? The answer to these questions can help you better navigate how to manage the gamut of emotions involved .
Do They Disapprove of Your Marriage or Your Mate ? Your parents are pretty blunt and to the point , and they just tell you flat out they don ’ t like this person . But , why ? They say because he ’ s too much older than you , or she can ’ t cook , or he didn ’ t finish college , or she doesn ’ t want children , the list can go on and on . Sometimes , the excuses are trivial and insignificant . Other times , they matter … a lot . Does this person have a troubled past ? Have they served time behind bars for criminal behavior ? Not to say that such a person could never become a good spouse , be family-oriented , and live a good , productive life – they certainly can . It will take the help of God and a willing-mind and heart to change , but they can . Your parents want the best for you . If all they know about them is their checkered past , they would not instantly approve .
Maybe your fiancé has been married before and is now divorced . Perhaps they have children from a previous relationship . Maybe they have trouble keeping a job , or choose not to work altogether . Your parents are most likely going to have issues with someone who chooses not to work and contribute to the family . They want the best partner for you . Do you want to support someone who is not willing to pull their weight in some way ?
