Accord Equality & Fairness Annual Report 2018
Case Study
Sandwell Make, Move and Munch
In the UK today, there are around 4 million people who have Type 2 diabetes and around
7 million living with heart and circulatory disease. These can be serious life-threatening
conditions. Make Move and Munch (MMM) is a community based health promotion
programme that supports people to eat better, move more and reduce their risk of
developing these conditions.

Learning Disability services
Skills For Life and Old Tree Nursery have collectively been successful in gaining a place
on the Wolverhampton framework for adults with complex needs. Old Tree Nursery also
successfully hosted Accord’s Great People Awards in 2018 and have contiued in the same
vein in 2019. The Great People Awards recognise staff, vounteers and apprentices who
have gone the extra mile in delivering services to colleagues and customers.
Since April 2016 Accord has successfully delivered 50 MMM Clubs to 1466 local residents
in schools and community venues. Of the six MMM programmes nationally, MMM Sandwell
has achieved the most significant improvements in almost all areas, and has been
recognised through multiple national awards.
This work was originally funded by the National Charity Partnership, a partnership
between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Tesco, between January
2016 and December 2017 and then subsequently supported in 2018 by Sandwell’s seven
Learning Communities.

Colleague Engagement
During 2018 Accord undertook a Colleague Engagement and Wellbeing survey. There were
29 questions, covering 7 topics; My Manager, My Company/Team, Personal Growth, Giving
Something Back, Fair Deal (Benefits) and Wellbeing. A working group consisting of staff
determined the questions.
Colleagues were incentivised to complete the survey by Accord donating £1 to its
corporate charity, Shelter, for every completed survey received, and agreeing to double it
once 750 returns were reached. This resulted in a donation of £1670. The overall response
rate was 52.4%.
The survey gave Accord some information on which to build changes to our working
practices. Areas where we are now enhancing our offering relate to reward & recognition,
personal growth and wellbeing. The enhancements we are making have been enshrined in
our new Workforce Strategy, the objectives of which are to:
Objective 1: Attract the talent required to deliver the products and services of
Accord.
Objective 2: Ensure colleagues feel valued and are recognised for the
contribution they deliver.
Objective 3: Increase colleague growth & capability
Objective 4: Optimise leadership

In Sandwell, MMM was led by Accord, and delivered in partnership with local partners
with the support of Sandwell Local Authority. MMM Clubs have been developed to support
families living in low income areas to take fun and manageable steps together to live
healthier lifestyles on a budget.
