By Sophie Booth Join the celebrations for Guy Fawkes Night on the 5th of November by making your own indoor sparklers which can be enjoyed by children at any time. This activity is excellent for fine motor skills with lots of folding, cutting and rolling and can be enjoyed by children as soon as it is finished! Materials Needed • Tin Foil • A4 Coloured Cellophane Sheets • Jumbo Straws • Cellotape • Scissors Making Sparklers 1. Cut a sheet of tin foil to the same size as the coloured cellophane 2. Choose two or three colours of cellophane and place the tin foil between them 3. Lengthways fold the cellophane and tin foil layers nearly in half 4. Starting at the open end, ask children to cut strips towards the middle, being careful not to cut through the fold 5. Continue cutting strips all along the length of the sheets of cellophane and foil 6. Wrap the cellophane and foil tightly around the end of straw, using cellotape every now and again to secure it 7. Continue until all the cellophane and foil is finished, making sure to secure in place with cellotape 8. Once the foil and cellophane are secure gently begin to separate and spread the strands from one another Now the children have their very own sparkler to explore. Encourage children to discover the different sounds the foil and cellophane make when moving together and watching as the light catches off the different colours.
