Any transitions can be very worrying for young children including starting
nursery for the first time or even changing classes. Picture books about start-
ing nursery or school can really help to reassure them about what to expect in a
new setting. Here are some lovely books with bright and fun illustrations that
you might want to invest in to read to the class during the first days of term.
1. I am too absolutely small for school by Lauren Child:
Lola is sure she is "too absolutely small for school," but Charlie, her older broth-
er, uses humour to patiently convince her she's isn’t.
2. The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn:
Chester the Raccoon is scared about starting school, his mother tells him a
family secret - the story of the kissing hand which helps to comfort Chester,
and the story may provide similar comfort to apprehensive little ones.
