“USING INNOVATIVE
TECHNOLOGIES LIKE 3D PRINTING
IN OUR MANUFACTURING PROCESS
HAS REDUCED WHAT ONCE TOOK
DAYS OR WEEKS TO PRODUCE DOWN
TO A FEW HOURS,”
ASHLEY BARBY, SPECSY.
Specsy
Offering the option of metal-free
frames reduces the risk for injury to
chronic chewers, and special needs
children are offered a more secure,
comfortable fit without metal parts
to bother them.
“We are extremely proud of all of the
technological advancements we offer
in our product lines,” says Slepian.
“But we also are leaders in paint and
finishing advancements. With our
constant focus on what’s new in the
production side, we are able to create
never before seen techniques that
translate to beautiful and unique
pieces of wearable art.”
At Specsy, the young Canadian company
uses cutting-edge technology to create
an in-store turnkey solution for
custom frames.
“We have harnessed innovation in both
the software and hardware sides of
our system,” says Specsy's Ashley Barby.
The Specsy in-store frame customiza-
tion app uses Augmented Reality by
creating a three-dimensional image
of the cusotmer to fit the frame, which
is the first-of-its-kind in the market-
place. And by using Augmented Reality
(AR), every element of optical frames
can be customized, from frame colour
and shape to base curve and bridge
width,” Barby says. The company
uses 3D printing to produce all of its
frames, enabling them to create a cus-
tom, bespoke quality product quickly
for the customer.
“Using innovative technologies like
3D printing in our manufacturing
process has reduced what once took
days or weeks to produce down to a few
hours,” she says, adding that weaving
innovation and technology into the
entire Specsy workflow has enabled a
level of custom design and production
speed that has not previously existed
in the market. “We are starting to see
the application of AR and AI in the
Canadian tech sector, particularly in
Toronto. It is only a matter of time
before we see the application of those
technologies more robustly applied to
the optical and retail industries.”
Barby says with irony the company
is proud they don't dictate any of our
designs, allowing the process to be
completely controlled by the custom-
er and optician.
“We are proud of that,” she says.
