CHEERFUL CHILDREN, HAPPY HEARTS
engaging in creative free play for a few hours
at the end of the day. “That’s where the kids’
imagination comes out, and I love it,” Jenny said.
“They need that free time, and if they want to be
on the playground, be superheroes, or play house,
or do art and music, that’s great.”
As a husband and wife team, the Hupps take
the notion of “family” to work every day. The staff,
children and parents are welcomed daily by the
duo who don’t stay locked behind office doors.
“Our office doors are always open,” Scotty said.
“I’m basically a 43-year-old kid, and I’ll get down
on the floor and play with the kids.”
“We are working all the time on the behind-
the-scenes duties,” added Jenny. “But we also
cook for all the children, and we will often fill in
for staff during the day as needed. Our parents
and children know us.”
That communication and family atmosphere
goes beyond the daycare setting, with the Hupps
sharing dinners with families and even playing golf
with parents. “We are one big family,” said Jenny.
“I want Cheerful Children to feel like home. We
will treat your child like our own.”
The Hupps also bring a passion for New Albany
and are proud to own a business in the community.
“New Albany is home to me, I’ve never lived
anywhere else,” said Jenny. “I grew up here, my
friends are here, I coach cheerleading at the high
school and middle school. We are diehard (Indiana
University) fans. We believe in this community,
and we believe in this school.”
And, working nearly 24/7 with your spouse?
No problem, said Scotty. “Jenny and I work really
well together. We both have the same goals, we
know where we want the school to go and we
both know how to accomplish it as a couple. That
makes a difference in our success. We’ve been
together for more than 21 years, and we know
what makes each other tick.”
The Hupps like to say they provide a warm and
welcoming environment where children grow
from a “bundle of joy” to a “bundle of curiosity.”
“It’s working so much better than I ever thought
it would,” Scotty said. “I love the kids and all the
controlled chaos. We have a 2-year-old nephew
there and in July we’ll have a grandbaby with
us. It’s all about our families and the personal
relationships we form with them.”
“Cheerful Children is a positive place to learn
and grow,” Jenny said. “Our kids feel loved and
welcomed. I couldn’t be any happier right now.
When a child comes to hug you each day and
says, ‘thank you, Miss Jenny,’ you know you’re
doing something right.”
