Impacting Lives in Schuyler County!

Eat Smart New York’s (ESNY) goal is to promote health by helping low-income individuals establish healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. Poverty is a risk factor for numerous health problems including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, poor pregnancy outcomes, and obesity. Positive changes in nutrition and physical activity are needed to avoid negative consequences of these health conditions. With agency’s support, nutrition educators are able to teach the important connection between nutrition and health to more of the 1,666 residents living at or below the poverty level (9%) in Schuyler County.

Who We Reach

Low Income:

• Families with Children

• Individuals

• Youth

• Pregnant Women

• Seniors (60+)

What We Do

Participants learn through a series of nutrition lessons how to better feed their families with less money. ESNY graduates improve their skills and knowledge about healthy eating by:

• Increasing vegetable and fruit

consumptions

• Eating smaller portions and decreasing salts

and fats

• Increasing levels of physical activity

“How could something so healthy, taste so good?”

School-age Youth

We are at a crossroads – in communities throughout the U.S., Americans are struggling to eat healthfully, stay physically active, and maintain healthy weights and general wellness. Now is the time to act!

What is the HEART Club?

The HEART Club is a group of individuals who are committed to collectively improving their lives - and the lives of others, by making healthy food and physical activity opportunities more accessible in their communities.

Who can participate?

You! Residents who have an interest in helping make positive sustainable changes.

HEART Club participants are individuals who:

-Desire to lead healthy lives

-Are inspired to share their knowledge about healthy living with the community

-Want to engage with others to improve access to nutritious foods and physical activity in their community

What will the HEART Club do?

The HEART Club will identify one issue that focuses on improving access to healthy foods and/or opportunities for physical activity in their community.
