Muthaiga is one of the oldest and the most affluent suburbs in Nairobi. It was once a dairy farm back in 1901 and was the first farm to supply Nairobi with dairy produce. In 1907 Muthaiga grew and most of the farms started being turned into residential plots for several years. The main street in Muthaiga was Karura Avenue, formally known as Morrison Avenue, named after the original settler, James Morrison. Morrison turned it into an affluent neighborhood by building cottage and pumping stations to supply water. The Muthaiga Country Club was also underway and a part of Morrison’s plans in 1913. The club was extremely popular with the settlers and became the go to club in East Africa. The place was origi- nally named after a Kikuyu herb that was found in Mr Ward’s plot. Mr Ward was part of Henderson and Ward firm, who were architects that sub-divided Muthaiga into small plots. Today Muthaiga still boasts its colonial cottages and will always remain the most history rich area in Kenya. Nyari Nyari is an upmarket estate set up along Red Hill road, bordering the affluent areas of Gigiri, Muthaiga, Runda and Kitisuru thus provides a perfect setting for lavish secure living away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Set a few kilometres from many diplomatic establishments including a host of embassies, the UN Headquarters Complex, and the US Embassy, Nyari is one of the most secure neighbourhoods in Kenya, with its own police station, and the home of the Diplomatic Police Corps. Nyari is also close to some of the best upmarket shopping and entertainment that Nairobi has to offer, including The Village Market Mall, Gigiri shopping centre, and the Warwick Centre. It is also a few minutes away from top medical facilities including the Nairobi Hospital and Gertrude’s Garden Children’s Hospital and various private international schools.
