With a history dating back 500 years , this former coaching inn at Crickhowell is not short on character . Stepping into the bar , you sense you are about to experience what a bar used to be like .
The Bear is much more than an atmospheric pub , offering accommodation in oak-beamed rooms or in modern suites in the converted stable block .
You can choose to dine in the bar , or in the restaurant at a candle-lit table where you can find good , honest dishes such as duck liver and Armagnac parfait , red onion marmalade and toast to start , with braised Welsh lamb shank , spring onion mash , seasonal veg and braising juices for main .
Offering the traditional pub , 35 en suite rooms and the restaurant , we were curious if it could deliver on all counts . A ‘ jack of all trades ’ it may be , but The Bear is certainly a master of all three .
The Bear is very dog friendly and he or she will enjoy the bowl of chicken .
