boat launch points on the south side of
the island allowing you to explore the
inner islands. West Bay Marina, Deer
Harbor Marina and the hamlet of Orcas
each have good launches. A popular
inner island route starts at West Bay
and goes through Deer Harbor to Jones
Island where a Cascadia Marine Trail
forested campsite awaits your discovery.
Another scenic destination is the Wasp
Islands, a small group reefs and islets
which include Yellow Island. A must-see
attraction is a driftwood home that was
built by a couple in 1946 and lived in for
many years. Now owned by the Nature
Conservancy, you can visit the cabin
and enjoy spring wildflowers. There is
no camping in the Wasp Islands. An
option is to circumnavigate Shaw Island
located across from Orcas Island. Cascadia campsites are located at Indian Cove
and Blind Bay.
San Juan Island is the most westerly
of the archipelago and is an epic location for orca whale sightings. The last
stop for the Anacortes ferry route, San
Juan offers many options for kayakers.
