Sun Central:
240 Days of
Sun in the San
Juans!
One glance at a weather map
and you’ll quickly see a trend:
the San Juan Islands rarely see
rain. In fact, it is said that the
islands see so little rain that
they are the “sunniest place in
Washington state.” Who can
argue? On average there are
240 days of sunshine a year in
the islands. Talk about a cure
for seasonal affective disorder
(SAD).
A variety of factors play into
keeping the islands sunny and
cheery. The most obvious is
the mountains on Vancouver
Island, which act as a shield
to the islands, much like the
Cascade Mountains serve
as a rain shadow to Eastern
Washington. Lastly, the wind
patterns throughout the year
favor the islands pushing the
weather patterns coming in
off the ocean away from the
islands. So it’s a perfect storm:
mountains and winds keep the
San Juan Islands sunny 240
days a year.
