MAKING A DIFFERENCE MAKING A DIFFERENCE The main event MAKING A DIFFERENCE He’s got your back The Cook Education Center Rotary Club Carole Davenport Carole Davenport makes life full of activities for the Navarro College students as the Special Events Coordinator at Navarro College along with being a grandma to four wonderful grandchildren. She is the wife of Na- varro County judge, H.M. Davenport. The couple have two daughters, Shana Owen and Sara Lasater, along with grandchildren Lexie and McKenna Owen, and Corley Sutton and Emy Lasater. She has lived in Corsi- cana since her father was transferred here when she was 16 years old. Her dedication to the community started very early on when she was both of her daughters’ Girl Scout leader for many years. She treasured the relationships formed with so many little girls that have now grown into women with children of their own. H.M. coached their daughter’s soft- ball teams while Carole ran the concession stand for many years and that furthered their relationships with so many people in the community. Carole later became a member of Rotary where she served as president, Freedom Festival chairman, Food for Fitness volunteer, and many other service opportunities. She has served on the Chamber of Commerce board, United Way board, and Corsicana Historical Society board. She has also been involved in many ways with First United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church, along with the Epiphany and Emmaus ministry. Starting a career in a position at The Cook Education Center has been a place where she can meet people want- ing to use the facility for events, as well as those visiting the museum and planetarium. Her biggest work treasure is the opportunity she has had to meet students and espe- cially that she has student workers to help with events at the facility. She has had the pleasure of meeting students from many other countries and that has been an amazing opportunity. Several lasting relationships have been made with these students along with priceless memories. Carole said It is such a joy for her to work with and get to know so many students and become involved with them. She feels honored to be at Navarro College and witness lives being changed and dreams being achieved. The feeling of joy is one of many that Carole has felt about living in a community like Corsicana where people care about each other and are willing to help one another. This small town has touched her heart and she looks for- ward to the positive years ahead. 34 Dr. Frank Means Dr. Means just retired from a chiropractic practice that spanned 25 years in Corsicana. He delivered well over 75,000 adjustments to over 5,000 dif- ferent patients. He’s performed hundreds and hundreds of low or no-cost sports physicals to the area’s student athletes. When Means and wife Melissa arrived in Corsicana in 1993, he quickly immersed him- self in the community, and became active and involved in First Baptist Church Corsicana. He starred in over 30 theater productions in his beloved Warehouse Living Arts Center. He joined the Corsicana Rotary Club and served as its President from 2008 to 2009. Frank and Melissa did mission work along the Amazon River, where, in one week, he deliv- ered over 200 adjustments to the villagers, boat crew members and fellow missionaries. Frank is a Gideon and has spoken to churches on their behalf to raise prayer and financial support. At one point, Means hosted a local radio show on KAND featuring local people with inter- esting stories. For a decade, he wrote monthly columns (with photos!) for Explore Magazine, covering nearly 250 parties, events and fundrais- ers across Navarro County. With his penchant for public speaking, he emceed events ranging from the Freedom Fes- tival every July Fourth to the Festival of Lights/ Lighting of the Park. Most of this service he happily did for free for his beloved Corsicana, and to make a difference. The community will miss the unique man that is Frank Means.
