Lee Peine started his full-time job at Boone Center Incorporated (BCI) just two weeks after he graduated from Troy Buchanan High School. According to mom, Lynn Peine, her son beamed with pride after being offered the full-time position. “This isn’t something that was given to him. He earned it on his own and he worked very hard to do it.” Peine had worked at BCI through the state’s Vocational Rehabilitation program and the TBHS workplace readiness program for two years prior to the job offer. Both programs help address the job-related needs of students with Individualized Education Plans. BCI was established in Moscow Mills in May 2011, but has filled a need in the disabled community for more than 50 years. The corporation, headquartered in St. Peters, works “to enrich the lives of adults with disabilities and their families by providing a choice of productive and fulfilling employment.” BCI contracts with employers to assemble, package and label various products and is partially funded by two sources - the St. Charles County Developmental Disabilities Resource Board (DDRB) and State of Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). According to Peine’s mom, Lee and his sister Abby both enjoy working at BCI. For Abby, who has physical and mental limitations, the BCI experience has been a great opportunity for her to learn what would be expected in a work environment. Peine is unsure whether her daughter’s physical limitations will prevent her from working full-time, but said they will give it a try and “pull back” if necessary. Mom believes BCI is the best thing for her kids and many young adults wanting a fulfilling opportunity. “Without this place of employment, where would these kids go? They aren’t given opportunities equal to their peers (because of) whether it is their disability or a physical limitation. This place (BCI) provides that type of employment. It gives these young adults a place of employment,” she said. Whether employees have a physical limitation or a mental limitation, BCI provides supervision and the opportunity to be a productive worker in a safe environment. Peine believes an added benefit for her children are the co-workers. “They accept them for who they are. It’s always positive to put your kids in a place where they don’t feel that they are so different,” she said. “For any parent, it makes you happy to see your child go to a job they like and be successful in the community doing an adult job in the workforce. You want them to succeed in life and that’s what it’s about. They are able to be successful adults in the workforce at BCI.”
