Experiential Learning Project Profile THINK ABOUT OUR AGING SOCIETY! GH06-001 Facilitating Elderly Volunteers To Serve The Disadvantaged Elderly Our Social Mission: To facilitate and work together with a group of elderly volunteers to organize social service activities to help the socially isolated and disadvantaged elderly. Student Learning: Students will learn about the population aging problem, elderly peercaring model, social service activity planning and implementing. They will have lots on-site observation and interaction with the elderly. The whole process allows students to practice their interpersonal skills and apply their knowledge to service provision. Project Opportunities: • • • • • • • • • • • Attend training workshops organized by the Centre and acquire the skills needed in communicating with them. Meet with the elderly volunteers of the Center and form small working groups with them. Facilitate the interaction, co-operation and mutual understanding between students and the elderly. The groups will plan and arrange elderly care activities. Develop a deeper understanding on the causes and consequences of population aging. Identify the potential issues that could arise from elderly care. Learn about the elderly welfare and social policy. Identify and examine the needs of the elderly. Develop and implement elderly care activities such as organizing visits to the socially isolated and disadvantaged elderly during special festivals. Design the conversation contents and the activities to be conducted during the visits. Conduct observation on elderly issues through on-site experience and interaction with the elderly. Be in contact with the group of elderly in frail condition through the services and discover the social problems arising from population aging. Try, test and develop a model to mobilize and enable the elderly who are better-off to take care of those who are underprivileged by giving peer support and care. Respond to the needs of the elderly beneficiaries and elderly volunteers, express the care and share thoughts with the elderly. Share experiences and feelings to the Centre, take memorable pictures and exchange greeting cards. Promotes the messages of respecting, loving and caring for the elderly, fostering inter-generational harmony, as well as assisting and caring for the disadvantaged elderly in the community.
