The role of women certainly needs no debate. She is a mother,
career woman, teacher, carer, baker, florist, professional, artist, visionary...and
so much more. To honour women in the Overberg we set out on a fascinating
and thrilling journey to discover who some of these women really are.
Nettie du Preez
The woman behind Intshiba
Crafts
Nettie du Preez, the woman behind Intshiba
Crafts, born in Swakopmund, has always been
a creative person. Since her early childhood
she had a profound love for anything creative
and arty. Her father, a builder, taught her the
pleasure to create something, to see it take
shape and evolve into something beautiful. So
art was always an interest in their family and
home.
She took art classes in school, but after
school she qualified as a nurse. “Since people
back in the day believed you have to have a
good qualification and not waste time on art
careers.”
She got married and had two children, MJ
and Bernadett. After the death of her son in
1994 she and her husband parted ways and a
new chapter in her life began in Cape Town.
One day she bought a few plates in a
ceramics store and decided to try out her
artistry. She painted the Big 5 and it was the
beginning of something she would devote
her life to. She gave art classes at home.
