Urals: Russia’s
industrial
powerhouse now
targeting event
exposure
he Urals is the
birthplace of
Russian industry
and, for 300 years, has
been a key industrial
centre of the country. It
is where several large
Russian companies are
headquartered, including
TMC, RCC, UMMC,
Uralvagonzavod and
VSMPO-AVISMA.
In the Sverdlovsk Region
foreign companies are
well represented with
manufacturing enterprises,
including Boeing, ABB,
Siemens and others. The
concentration of industrial
production in this region is
four times higher than the
Russian average.
Sverdlovsk Region is
also a trade and logistics
centre and ranks first after
Moscow and St Petersburg
in terms of cargo turnover
in Russia. In all, there are
over 200,000 companies
registered representing a
variety of industries and
activities.
The Sverdlovsk Region
occupies second place in
terms of domestic ratings
for event potential in the
w w w.exhibitionworld.co.uk
country, with over two
million visitors annually
visiting the Urals capital,
Ekaterinburg. The city
narrowly missed out in
the final voting round in
November 2018 for staging
the World Expo 2025.
The city has the
infrastructure and great
potential for hosting
MICE events in a variety
of formats and boasts the
modern Ekaterinburg-
EXPO, a complex offering
over 50,000sqm of
modern exhibition and
forum pavilions, as well
as 60,000sqm of outdoor
exposition space.
In 2019 the complex
will also see a new, multi-
functional congress centre
added with capacity of up
to 5,000 delegates.
The exhibition
opportunities of the
region are organically
complemented by well-
developed transport
and hotel infrastructure.
Koltsovo International
Airport – which has
won awards for the best
regional airport in Russia
and the CIS – is connected
to many global destinations
with direct flights.
Ekaterinburg also offers
450 hotels with 30,000
rooms, including global
brands such as Hyatt,
Ramada, Angelo by Vienna
House, Park Inn and others.
Again, the wider
Sverdlovsk Region ranks
among the top 10 tourist
destinations in Russia and
there is a wide offer of
unique post-event tours,
including to industrial
plants, gold mines, semi-
precious metals mines and
many more.
The Ural Congress
Bureau (UCB), created
to cover the Sverdlovsk
Region, acts as an official
destination promoter and
is there to help organisers
and visitors. The UCB is
tasked with increasing
the number, quality and
scientific importance
of exhibitions, events
and conferences held in
the region and holds all
necessary information
and contacts of hotels,
conference facilities, local
organisers, venues and
event suppliers.
