NEWS THE DEALMAKER Steve Monnington of Mayfi eld Media Strategies runs the rule over the latest global exhibition deals A 12 s I mentioned in last month’s column, a number of the large organisers – most recently Ascential, Centaur and Informa – have been selling some of their non-core assets. Now it’s the turn of UBM to sell with CloserStill Media acquiring Technology for Marketing (TFM), eCommerce expo, Top 50 and the Care Show from them. Although this is only the second acquisition that CloserStill have made since Infl exion invested in March 2015, (the fi rst being iLearning in France earlier this year), it’s a strategic deal with a lot of upside potential. The Care Show fi ts well with their existing portfolio of healthcare events which includes Health+Care. For the three technology events, CloserStill have created a joint venture with Graeme Howe and Justin Opie who originally launched e-commerce expo in 2006 and sold it to UBM in 2010. All the UBM staff involved directly in the running of the shows have joined the CloserStill team. Having recently acquired Franchise shows in America and an Auto show in Indonesia, Comexposium have turned their attention back to Europe with the acquisition of a 60 per cent stake in Converse Media, a UK company that itself invests in the development of exhibition organisers. Converse owns a majority stake in Insight Events Denmark and Sweden which run exhibitions and conferences across a number of sectors including energy, building, transport, fi nance and IT. This gives Comexposium a foothold in the Nordic region as it brings additional conference organizing skills to them, which could benefi t their events in other geographies. Tarsus have strengthened their position in Mexico and increased their involvement with E. J. Krause (EJK) by acquiring 50 per cent of the shows that they were not already involved with.
