EDITOR’S LETTER A MIRROR TO THE WORLD L ooking into construction events for this month’s cover feature (p22), I was struck by the extent to which trade shows reflect the industries they serve. Not only do their fortunes rise and fall with the fortunes of those industries, they are also a vital resource should disaster strike. We all know the importance of networking, but we can sometimes overlook how exhibitions become a focal point for sectors in a state of flux and re-evaluation. Whether it’s tragedies like Grenfell or issues like sustainability, gender equality or digitalisation, the construction industry now more than ever needs to meet face-to-face and have those all-important conversations. In this issue, we also meet the organiser of Brand Licensing Europe. The licensing industry is learning how best to reach modern consumers, who are consuming content across more devices, platforms and sources than ever before – a challenge that those working in events understand all too well. Elsewhere in this edition, the EN Roundtable tackles a potentially contentious topic as it looks at the organiser-venue relationship, Mike Seaman of Raccoon Events argues that investors shouldn’t write off the consumer event, and we have a chat about women in the events industry with IMEX Group CEO Carina Bauer.
