It was mainly down to a passion for music including Manchester bands such as New Order and The Stone Roses. All roads led me to Manchester to study in 1989, during which time I was a part-time roadie at Manchester Polytechnic Students’ Union. WhatÕ s your favourite thing about events? The atmosphere and audience engagement – the real 'hairs on the back of your neck’ moments. WRG has promoted art director Charlotte Smithson to the role of creative director. 2 What will you bring to the new role? Passion, professionalism, experience and insight. 62 3 Crowning moment? Negotiating, activating and renewing the First Direct naming rights agreement in my previous role. 4 Funniest work moment? It involved a colleague and a hotel reception fountain during Galaxy in Ibiza but what happens on the White Isle has to stay there! Dream job? Chairman at Manchester City Football Club. Who is the individual you most admire? My wife – for putting up with me and bringing up our amazing daughters. The last fi lm you watched? Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Paul Byrom has stepped down as managing director of organiser Upper Street Events with immediate effect. Biggest frustration? Incorrect perception around the north of England. Best piece of advice? Be positive and pragmatic. Simon Foster (2), previously CEO of UBM EMEA, has been appointed chief executive offi cer of the Comexspoium Group, from August 2017. Once Foster takes up the position, current CEO Renaud Hamaide will transition into the role of executive chairman. What have you done in the fi rst month in the job? As with any new job, the fi rst month included a company induction and understanding any challenges ahead. How do you intend to face the challenges in the industry? Mainly through client focus, a collaborative partnership approach, embracing new technology and ways of working. Reed Travel Exhibitions portfolio director, Craig Moyes (1), has left the company to take up the role of CEO of the Society of Garden Designers. 5 The ACC Liverpool Group has appointed former Liverpool Football Club chief executive Ian Ayre (4) as its new chair of the board. He will take over from current chair David McDonnell, who steps down after seven years in the role. Manchester Central has appointed Shaun Hinds to the role of CEO. He will take up the role in June when current CEO Angie Robinson retires. Blitz|GES has promoted Carol Gibbs to the role of director of venues, while Mark Watson (5) is promoted to creative director, with a brief to expand Blitz|GES’ strong reputation for high-quality design.
