COLUMN Outside the box Billy Smart of Mobile Technik walks EN through Heathrow Airport’s Awareness Roadshow exhibition Safety first U 46 K Airport Safety Week was a national campaign to promote health & safety best practices and departmental cohesion at UK Airports, all while raising awareness of personal safety, culture and operational standards across the entire industry. Across the country, UK airports got involved with school outreach delivered by Leeds, Bradford and London City airports, along with fire and first aid demonstrations delivered by Belfast City, Cardiff and Aberdeen airports. To ensure that all employees had a chance to be involved in the initiative, Heathrow Airport enlisted Mobile Technik to supply a trailer, and created the ‘Awareness Roadshow’, which visited each of the four terminals and cargo centres over five days. In addition to internal departments showcasing their expertise, renowned external exhibitors included British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, DHL, Balfour Beatty, Swissport, Gate Gourmet and Worldwide Flight Services. Mobile Technik supplied its R20 exhibition trailer, specifically requested due to its expansive 70m² internal space, to bring together key players from Heathrow Airport with a joint learning objective of ‘bringing safety to the people’. The state-of-the-art mobile trailer provided space for 12 rotating exhibitors throughout the week, each with their own display board to showcase departmental activity and sector developments. Utilising its in-house expertise, Mobile Technik created the campaign branding and graphic messages on the sides of the exhibition trailer, as well as the additional roof panels to attract additional footfall with the event’s ‘open door’ attendance policy. In previous years, the UK Airport Safety Week had been held in a static venue externally to Heathrow Airport, but in 2017, due to previous feedback, the event organisers sought an alternative solution that opened up the event to more of airport’s colleagues. The flexibility of Mobile Technik’s expandable exhibition trailer allowed the campaign roadshow to be positioned in the best locations around Heathrow Airport, serving each terminal community in such a way that even if they didn’t see the campaign they’d see the trailer’s eye-catching branding and head in. Footfall this year dramatically increased, welcoming more than 2,000 attendees. It was a privilege to be part of an event of this nature, due to the level of planning required to safely deliver a mobile roadshow of this scale, in a prominent environment with heightened security procedures. The logistics of moving a 38-tonne exhibition trailer between the flight patterns of the UK’s busiest airport is no mean feat, especially when it includes travelling down live runways and taxiing zones. The trailer was thoroughly searched prior to the event and escorted daily by airside security via live airfields to each terminal.
