“I’m sure about that. She’s as upset as we are. Beside
herself, actually.”
Daily pointed toward the door, a clear indication he hoped
they would get up to leave. “Well, Mrs. Murphy, we’ll talk to her
anyway. Just go home now. My bet is when we locate Sherry,
we’ll find your daughter too, unless she shows up on her own.
Truthfully, I don’t think anything happened to either of them. If
you think of anything else, write it down so you won’t forget to
tell the investigating officer, okay?”
Maude dragged herself out of the worn wooden chair, put
her hand on Mary Margaret’s shoulder and headed toward the
door. She turned back to Officer Daily. “What’s the matter with
me anyway? The only friend my daughter made this year is so
much older than her and I don’t even know the woman’s
address or phone number. Am I really that stupid?” A tear
found its way down her cheek.

The conductor called out, “Devon.” Maude followed Mary
Margaret out the rear door of the streetcar, hanging on to her
purse. She huffed and puffed, trying to keep up, but finally had
to say, “Slow down. I’m so worn out, I’m havin’ a hard time
keeping up with you.”
Mary Margaret stopped to allow her mother to catch up. As
they walked side-by-side at a slower pace, Maude said, “Maybe
she’s so mad at me, she decided to stay with Sherry just to
worry me. Probably told her she’d let me know ݡ
